Restore Our Earth | Earth Day 2021

Restore Our Earth | Earth Day 2021

Let’s talk Earth Day! Earth Day is so much more than a mere marketing campaign. It’s a day to stop and appreciate what Mother Earth has given us.

Somewhere between David Attenborough, Greta Thunberg, and the current hot Netflix documentary Seaspiracy, this Earth Day we find ourselves more grateful than ever for our planet.

We’ve all heard the slogans that have turned to cliches - “We only have ONE Earth”. But you know what they say about cliches, right? They’re unoriginal, but true.

Earth Day IllustrationThis year’s Earth Day theme is “Restore Our Earth”. Let’s break down what that means. As we long for the return to “normalcy” following a difficult year with Covid-19, we are reminded of both the great strength and fragility of the earth. When our cities closed down, we saw a resurgence in nature and were granted hope that our wildlife can rebound within a generation, IF we look after our planet.

A simple search on google will tell you that Americans dispose 100 BILLION plastic bags every year. Keep scrolling, and you’ll read that it takes roughly 500 years for a single plastic bag to degrade into landfill. 500 years!

Caring about the planet is great, but it’s not enough!

Did you know, that if we keep up with our current trends, we will not have enough food on our planet by 2050?

There is so much talk about how we are using up our planet’s resources on animal agriculture (no, we’re not here to try and convince you to go vegan), but we are also faced is another “less sexy” food threat – food wastage.

Earth

Globally, if food waste could be represented as its own country, it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter, behind China and the US – United Nations Environment

According to the US Department of Agriculture, America wastes between 30-40% of the total food supply. That’s approximately 133 billion pounds of food a year!

We at D’vash Organics pride ourselves on using ugly produce to reduce food waste. We responsibly source our dates from around the world, using dates that would otherwise be considered “too ugly” to make it to market. It’s small, but it’s something.

Just imagine if everyone did something small. If every person, if every business, just took a moment to think. To evaluate. To stop supporting the conglomerates that have turned their back on our planet. To just respect our home. Remember the cliché from earlier? We only have ONE!

So, whether you’re reading this on Earth Day or not, remember to take a moment to appreciate this beautiful planet we call home.

“Together, we have the power to Restore Our Earth.”
